1. In the studio, Cziffra is most known for his dazzling recordings of Franz Liszt's virtuoso works. He also recorded many of Frédéric Chopin's compositions and those of Robert Schumann. Cziffra died in Senlis, France, 72 years old, from a heart attack resulting from series of complications from lung cancer due to smoking and alcohol.

4. Cziffra gave a performance of Liszt’s Fantasy on Hungarian Folk Themes six days before this one, on March 6, , conducted by Bernhard Conz. It’s available on the same Idi CD as the concerto with Vernizzi. I haven’t heard it, so I can’t make a real comparison, but I generally trust Cluytens’s work, particularly in live performance.

7. In the Hungarian Fantasy, the Liszt solos and the various arrangements I imagine Cziffra is unsurpassed and unsurpassable, not that I propose to research that matter much.
